The National Museum Cardiff is part of the National Museum of Wales system currently of eight museums that was founded in 1907 when it inherited the collection of the Cardiff Museum. Although the current building at Cathays Park began in 1912, World War I delayed its construction and public opening until 1927.

Coins & Medals Gallery

The National Museum Cardiff has over 1,200 of the finest specimens covering the full range of its numismatic collection displayed in the Coins and Medals gallery. The numismatic collection is wide-ranging, from ancient times to the present, with five main areas of strength: Celtic coins, Greek and Roman coins, coins of England and the British Isles, tokens, banknotes, and what may be termed “paranumismatica”—items that are primarily Welsh, and commemorative medals and awards relating to Wales and the exploits of Welsh people. Beside these items, there are also small comparative collections of European, British Colonial, and world coins.

Hoards

The collection includes numerous hoards, archaeological site finds, and single coin finds from the Roman period onwards. Coins found in or relating to Wales remain an important element of contemporary collecting. Occasional Welsh finds of treasure, such as: the English Civil War Hoard from Tregwynt, Pembrokeshire, thought to have been buried around 1648 and rediscovered in 1996; the Bryn Maelgwyn Hoard of 204 silver pennies of Canute the Great (c. 985-1035) found near Deganwy Castle, Llandudno Conwy; and several from around Anglesey and Gwynedd provide spectacular individual acquisitions.

The collection’s Roman and medieval coins are included in the “Origins: in search of early Wales” gallery and a display of medals in the Main Hall relates to the two world wars. The text in all the displays are in both English and Welsh (or Cymric).
