Curator for Ancient Coins at the British Museum
The British Museum’s Money and Medals department has recently reviewed its structure to support the Museum’s Masterplan and strategic ambitions. They are looking for a “Curator: Ancient Collections” to work in Full-time and permanent on Money and Medals at Bloomsbury with a salary of £53,652 per annum. Curator of ancient collections is our new role to undertake high-profile research into, and make publicly accessible, the Museum’s world-class ancient numismatic collections. With research, publications and exhibitions experience in either ancient Greek, ancient Middle Eastern, ancient Central or South Asian numismatics, the successful candidate will have extensive experience in fundraising for research projects. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and manage a team of curators developing research in alignment with the Museum’s priorities and making its collections publicly accessible through exhibitions, publications and documentation.
Key areas of responsibility:
- To lead major research projects on, and beyond, the ancient numismatic collection including projects involving external partners
- To raise money to support research projects on and beyond the ancient numismatic collections, including projects involving external partners
- To research, develop and make accessible the ancient Greek, ancient Middle East and central and south Asian numismatic collections
- To make the ancient numismatic collection publicly accessible via high-profile publication, digital, display, and broadcast projects
- To contribute significantly to the management of the Museum
- Leading, managing and motivating curatorial and research teams, including responsibility for managing performance and supporting professional development
- To lead on digitization projects on the ancient numismatic collection
- To lead on improving the display of the ancient numismatic collection, and contribute to the display of the Museum’s collection as a whole, both on- and off-site
- To lead the generation of significant income
About you:
- You will have a degree or equivalent experience in ancient history, archeology or related subject and be externally recognized authority in ancient numismatic collections.
- You will also have experience of relevant display, research, publication and broadcast projects and have a track record in securing research grants and income generation.
- Good communication skills, ability to lead internal and external stakeholders across the Museum and academic worlds is also essential.
